Volcano Vacations in Mexico: Pico de OrizabaPosteado el August 22, 2007 - Categorizado en Mexico Ecotourism, Mexico Places, Mexico Tourism Novice climbers need not apply: This is North America’s tallest volcano (alt. 18,700 feet), known as Citlaltépetl (”Star”) in Náhuatl. Its perfectly shaped cone encloses a 1,000-foot-deep crater, the product of repeated explosions in the 16th and 17th centuries. Luckily for alpinists, Pico de Orizaba has been quiet since 1687 and was made a national park in 1936. Experienced ice-climbers flock to Pico’s glaciated slopes in December and January, but even non-climbers can enjoy hiking or riding horses in the foothills; October to March is best. Fit — and altitude-acclimated — hikers can also get a taxi to the village of Villa Hidalgo and walk about 5 miles up to the mountain hut called “Piedra Grande” at about 14,000 feet, where climbers stage their summit assaults.Source:sfgate.com Gastronomical drinks in Mexico: 100% Natural, for LicuadosPosteado el June 30, 2007 - Categorizado en Mexico Fashion Tourism, Mexico Meetings and Conventions Tourism, Mexico Places, Mexico Tourism Licuados, drinks made from fresh fruit mixed with water or milk, are much more popular than soft drinks. This is the old Mayan city of T’ho, taken in 1542 by Francisco de Montejo for the greater glory of Spain (see Mayan people of Mexico) . Thereafter, three hundred years flowed under the bridge until a boom in sisal made the town wealthy in the 1870s. Fine Spanish colonial mansions sprang up all over town in neoclassical and Moorish styles, but in the 1920s, boom turned to bust and the mansions began fell into a state of neglect. The Villa is a sublime restoration. Original ironwork and floor tiles survive, arched verandas have been brought back to life, fountains sing in the lush gardens and stanley furniture. Tables and chairs are sprinkled all over the place, giving peace and privacy. There’s a pool surrounded by tall palms, yet, incredibly, you’re in the middle of the Yucatan’s capital city. Expect high beamed ceilings, big, old wooden doors, bold reds and ochres and a fabulous inner courtyard. And with just seven guest rooms this urban hacienda never feels crowded. Source:i-escape.com
